Padel Rules FAQ: Your Most Asked Questions Answered

Rules FAQ · Updated 2026
The most asked padel rules questions answered in plain English. Padel follows tennis scoring, uses an underarm serve, and allows glass walls after a bounce. That’s 90% of what beginners need to know.
Is padel scoring the same as tennis?
Yes. Padel uses the same scoring system as tennis — 15, 30, 40, game. At deuce (40–40), most 2026 club formats play a single deciding point to end the game. Some competitions still use traditional advantage scoring or Golden Point — confirm your league format before playing.
Can you volley in padel?
Yes. Volleys are allowed and encouraged once the point is underway. The one exception: on the return of serve, the ball must bounce before being played. After that, you can volley freely.
Can the ball hit the wall in padel?
Yes — after the ball bounces on the court. Once it bounces on your side, the ball can hit the back glass, side glass or fence and still be in play. If the ball hits the wall or fence before bouncing, it’s out.
How do you serve in padel?
The padel serve is underhand. Drop the ball, let it bounce once behind the service line, then hit it below waist height cross-court into the opponent’s service box. You get two attempts. The serve can rebound off the back glass after bouncing in the service box and is still legal — but if it hits the metal fence after the bounce, it’s a fault.
Can you play singles in padel?
Padel is primarily a doubles sport (2 vs 2). Singles courts exist but are rare and narrower. Around 95% of recreational padel is played doubles.
When do you switch sides in padel?
Teams switch sides after every odd-numbered game: the 1st, 3rd, 5th game and so on. This keeps conditions fair throughout the match.
What happens if the serve hits the net?
If the serve clips the net and lands correctly in the service box, it’s a let — replay the serve. If it clips the net and lands out or hits the fence, it’s a fault.
What is the golden point in padel?
The golden point (also called Star Point in some 2026 formats) is played at deuce. The receiving team chooses who returns and which side. Whoever wins that single point wins the game. No advantage round needed.
Can the ball go out of the court and come back in?
If the ball bounces legally and goes over the glass out of the enclosure, it may still be playable — depending on whether the venue allows safe exit and entry. In competitive play, follow venue and league rules. In social play, agree the rule before you start.

More padel rules questions
Is it a fault if I step on the service line?
Yes. Keep both feet behind the service line during the entire serve motion. Stepping on or over the line before contact is a foot fault.
Can both partners hit the ball in padel?
No. Only one player can hit the ball per shot. If both partners touch it, the point is lost.
What is a let in padel?
A let is a replay. It most commonly occurs when the serve clips the net and lands correctly in the service box. In social play, lets are also sometimes called when external interference disrupts play.
Can you hit the ball through the fence gaps?
After the ball has bounced on your side and passed through a gap or under the fence, you may reach outside the court to play it — if the venue allows safe access. This is rare in practice.
Do the rules change at club vs competitive level?
The core rules stay the same. Scoring formats (Golden Point, Star Point, advantage) can vary between club, league and tournament formats. Always confirm before playing.
